We are thrilled to bring you the world-renowned Shakespeare In Love, based on the screenplay by Marc Norman and Tom Stoppard and adapted for the stage by Lee Hall, with music by Paddy Canneen.
The young playwright William Shakespeare is struggling with writers block. Trying to write his new comedy, Romeo and Ethel the Pirate’s Daughter, he faces pressure from to two very demanding producers. That’s until he meets his muse in the form of the feisty, brilliant and beautiful Viola de Lesseps, aristocratic daughter of a wealthy merchant.
Viola loves the Theatre “above all”, is our Will’s greatest admirer, and secretly longs to be an actor – forbidden for a female in the 16th Century.
However, both are dejected when they learn that Viola’s father has promised her to the devious and devilish Lord Wessex in order to gain a title for their family.
Under a veil of secrecy, and against a bustling background of mistaken identity, ruthless scheming and backstage theatrics, Will’s love for Viola quickly blossoms, inspiring him to write his greatest romantic masterpiece – Romeo and Juliet.
Lee Hall’s version of this successful screenplay is very funny, clever, filled with references to Shakespeare’s work, and is a delight for theatre goers of all ages.
Dates: Friday 24 March to Saturday 1 April 2023 (not including Sunday 26 March), matinee performance on Saturday 25 March.
Directed by Rebecca Carney
