Hay Fever

By Noël Coward

Director – Phil Harrison

Prepare for an evening of uproarious comedy and delightful chaos with Noël Coward’s classic farce, “Hay Fever”.  Set in the idyllic English countryside, the play opens at the Bliss family’s eccentric manor house, where retired actress Judith Bliss, her novelist husband David, and their bohemian children, Sorel and Simon, each invite a guest for a weekend getaway.  Unbeknownst to each other, their unsuspecting guests soon find themselves entangled in the Bliss family’s outrageous antics and unpredictable whims.

As the guests arrive, they are met with a whirlwind of theatrical flair and spontaneous drama. Judith, ever the diva, oscillates between grand performances and hysterical outbursts, while David retreats into his literary world, often oblivious to the mayhem around him.  Sorel and Simon add to the pandemonium with their flirtatious escapades and sibling rivalries, ensuring that no moment is dull.  The bewildered guests, including a strait-laced diplomat, a shy flapper, a sporty boxer, and a chic sophisticate, quickly realise they are caught in a comic storm they can’t escape.

The play’s genius lies in Coward’s sharp wit and masterful dialogue, as the Bliss family’s unpredictable behaviour leads to a series of hilarious misunderstandings and romantic entanglements.  Each scene bursts with comedic brilliance, from Judith’s melodramatic declarations to Simon’s artistic tantrums.  The guests, initially bemused and out of their depth, begin to unravel under the pressure of the Blisses’ unconventional lifestyle, leading to a crescendo of farcical situations and laugh-out-loud moments.

“Hay Fever” is a sparkling gem of British theatre, capturing the essence of Coward’s sophisticated humour and timeless charm.  With its larger-than-life characters, witty repartee, and impeccable comedic timing, this production promises an evening of non-stop laughter and entertainment.  Observe the hilarity and high spirits of “Hay Fever” – book your tickets and join the Bliss family for a weekend you’re unlikely to forget!
